Here is the poll for defensive player of the year. There doesn’t appear to be a clear cut favorite this season but here are a few players who deserve consideration.
Colton Adkins of Airport led the Jets in tackles last season with 8 per game. The 5’9″ 175 linebacker has a nose for the football and should lead an improved Airport defense this season.
Huron DE/LB Jordan Frayer will anchor the Chief defense this season. The 6’3″ 210 lb senior is an excellent athlete and is the leading returning tackler for Huron.
Milan’s Luke Karr is one of a few returning defensive starters for the Big Reds. Karr played along side Milan standouts Joe Dunn and DeAndre Mitchell at linebacker last season and is the leading returning tackler on the team.
Flat Rock senior David Minckeweicz led the Rams in tackles last season from his defensive back position. The speedy senior will lead a much improved Ram defense this season.
Riverview’s Brock Salser was an absolute monster for the Pirates last season. The 6’0″ 210 LB led Riverview in tackles last season with 114 and will lead a physical Buc defense looking to improve on last season’s 4-5 season.
Others to watch defensively around the league are: Riverview LB Vince Maheres, Grosse Ile LB Cory Groff, Airport DB Zach Baker, Jefferson DL Kyle Fudoli, Airport DE Jake Anson, Huron DL Ken Phelps Flat Rock LB Colin Knoch and the entire SMCC defense.
Drew antonelli starting safety and rollback for smcc as a sophomore, you'll be hearing the name a lot.
Yea that was borderline, sorry if offended, but its also the truth……rams
Stay classy rams
Smcc will be down, big. it will be like thier 2008 team, sophmores will be playing, except they will not be making it to the semi finals like they did in 08. No more cusumano, lamour, wilson or pannone. eddings will fill the void at linebacker and be thier best defensive player and Adler will be the heart and soul of the offense along with leaman if he gets shifty like cusumano did and heard from someone at the scrimmage tonight that a couple of thier starters are banged up and they have a another soph. safety wearing number 3…..??
Absolutely. …..they have an advantage, my son was offered a recruiting package, err academic scholarship, what do we get out of the deal? We get to run around with our noses in the air bragging about how our child attends a private school….umm ,no thanx. Wasn't worth the hassle..
…rams
This guy is accusing cc of recruiting from the cyo. That's like airport recruiting from wager. Who cares
I wonder how Many cc kids went on to play college ball. Bet it's less then airport Milan and a couple other hl schools. I think the success cc has is not because of superb talent over everyone it's because they have a great coach and students that know what it takes because of those that have gone before them. Let's be be honest here, airport, Milan and view all have more talented individuals but somehow not the better team.
Please stop hating on smcc, they have earned everything they have from hard work and dedication to there school team and to the players who wore the green and gold before them, its a tradition in which if you didnt go there you wont understand!!! This is suppose to be the year people get back at smcc lets just sit back and watch what happens, but i wouldnt bet against them. Good luck to all the huron leauge teams this year.
All the cheap shots directed at SMCC only prove one thing
Every high school coach in the country keeps an eye on the elementary and middle school programs for young talent. If they don't, they probably don't have a very successful program. And talk about freebies, those public school kids get free tuition, free bus transportation to school, free books and supplies, some get free lunch. Man, what a sweet deal !!!!!! If smcc could offer that, just think of the success they could have……wow
SMCC is good, thats why they are the team that everyone loves to hate…Now let's move on and talk about football. Cause you clearly just sound plain stupid talking about "how bad they are" or "how they recruit" They are by far the best program in the Huron League…plain & simple, now let it rest!
SMCC does recruit…..although they don't give athletic scholarshipos I know..the hoops coach, and football coach have a good idea of the kids they want to come to SMCC from grade school..hence those kids are awarded academic scholarship or "performance" money…..Let any other coach in the Huron League go coach at SMCC with the taletn they get, and they'd be coaching deep into the playoffs as well..maybe they'd even win when they get to the big game..
And I did not mention the champions before playoffs:
Riverview: 1968
SMCC: 1969
I almost had it.
CC was runner up in 1984. They lost to Wyoming Park 33-21. I was at that game. I was a lot younger then too.
Flat Rock: State Champs: 1976
SMCC: State Champs: 1984
SMCC: State Champs: 1991
Jefferson: State Champs: 1994
Riverview: Runner Up: 1997
Riverview: Runner Up: 2002
SMCC: Runner Up: 2005
SMCC: Runner Up: 2009
SMCC: Runner Up 2010
I think that is all of them.
I heard CC tuition is 7 grand, yea thats worth it….NOT!
I beg to ask the poster that said" Please stop with the "almost" won crap. Your embarrasing the team"…
How many other Huron League teams have made it to the state final let alone two years in a row. Most of our teams never get that far.
How many state championships have been won by the SMCC haters? or how many times have they made it to the finals? I do not recall any.
GI Football
I atteneded CC. My brothers and sisters attended CC and the Academy. We had a 20 min. drive every day. I can assure you no one recruited us to play football. Kids attend this school from all over the area for many reasons, not just football.
Ya Romulus is 25 minutes from Monroe!!! RECRUITING!!! Take all their wins away. No wonder they win so much!!
Or maybe CC just proves theyre the best around every year and make kids want to go there out of their own choice. Not because they are recruited.
If GI is gonna make the playoffs, that first game is gonna be key. EM
Yes GI should have a good year as I've said before previously.
O will score, D is the key.
Playoffs….see D above.
SITOFN
GI appears to have some talent this year, no excuses if they miss the playoffs. Agree SITOFN?

CC has a kid from Romulus? Wonder how he ended up at cc.

My comment is a COMPLIMENT.
How is losing in the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS 2 years running (Why I said almost) embarrasing?? This is a HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT and makes all of the HL proud!
Your skin is thinning…avoid the Carleton water.

Please stop with the "almost" won crap. Your embarrasing the team.
Embarrasing what team?

Please stop with the "almost" won crap. Your embarrasing the team.
watch for the kid kid from romulus on defense for CC
I don't think anyone has ever won both. Certainly not a PC move. Maybe there were some deserving but I doubt if it has happened.
Chris for the comment about Kish has there ever been an offensive and defensive player of the year?
Rumor has it Alex Kish is playing a little LB for GI this year… Anyone for OPOY ANDD DPOY?!?!?!?!
-JVKT
SMCC is a Football TEAM first and clearly understands that Defense wins (HL) championships….almost state championships TWICE in a row.
A barley pop or 2 wager that they lead the league in team D again this year……they'll have a hitter or 2.
SITOFN
Since 2003 SMCC is 49-7 vs the league. I think by now it is safe to assume that as long as Giarmo and his staff are there, they will put out a quality product on both sides.
-bn
Looks like there might be some hurt feelings chris.
Points per game allowed since 2001:
SMCC…….13.2
Airport….16.4
Jefferson..20.1
Milan……20.2
Riverview..20.6
GI………25.5
FR………28.6
Huron……29.4
Maybe CC and their staff have earned the honorable mention tag?

Let's face it. SMCC is an unknown at this point. They graduated a ton of seniors.
As for every other league defense let me explain why I said the entire SMCC defense.
Best coach and best program right now in the league. Fourteen game winning streak in the Huron league. They basically have put the best defensive unit in the league out on the field for the better part of a decade.
Salser was a bit overlooked last year cause of the big fellas up front, he won't be this year. Adkins is a beast for his size. This award is very wide open. EM
Couldnt name anyone from CC individually so honorable mention the whole defense? Why not honorable mention every teams denfense then Chris?
SMCC standouts could very well be: Michael Thibault and Eric Prochnow(he has a new last name however) #33 from last year.
Wow…sounds like the GI defense will not be improved……No D line, linebackers from JV, small safety, and corners that don't really matter unless teams pass a lot , Like I said in the beginning, better hope that O line is as good as last years or its gonna be along year. See ya in week 2 I believe…….rams
Sorry off topic but where are our boys from last year playing at this year?
Who was 56 for Huron last year? He'll be good too along with brewer
Now were talkin' football!!!
Hit or get hit with emotion and vengence….DEFENSE.
Chris…it's CORY Groff and he is thick, fast and mean. You forgot about Vince and Joe Alongi both with size and speed and a little chippyness too (DE & LB). Full time LB's from JV last year will be good too + Mr Kish in the D mix??
GI D-backs should be improved with an oft injured brother of a former stand-out returning from surgery and looking great. SS is a former LB (too small) but has the nose and loves to hit.
GI's D line is a question but a new GI D coach for the line….. it all starts up front so time will tell.
I agree Salser is a monster and a good choice for DPOY. Reminds me some of Joe Dunn…good company.
Again, I'd like to see a suprise here and Defense is an area where little knowns can make a big difference.
