Week 11 Our Thoughts, Not Yours

By Chris Schultz and Frank Vajcner

Each week, Chris and Frank will give their thoughts on our blog teams. For the most part, one will generally keep things on the rails, while the other goes a little off the wall.

Carlson

Frank: Marauders go back-to-back in the District round. Next is an even tougher test in OLSM. I guarantee that Marauder Stadium will be RAUCOUS next week.

Chris: Carlson with an impressive win over a very solid Franklin program.

Flat Rock

Frank: I have a feeling that Graham Junge heard me say that he needed to cook. And how about Evan Szalay setting another school record? Also, Buck Reaume might be the high school coach version of Dan Campbell.

Chris: The Rams sure can score points

Ida

Frank: That’s nothing to hang your heads over, Ida. But I would have rather faced Lumen in a Regional or Semifinal.

Chris: Ida has an excellent team. How good does that make Lumen? (By the way, did the MHSAA ask any of the Division 6 schools if they wanted JLC to move up a division? I know that answer.)

Riverview

Frank: That may not be a vintage Rouge team, but they still know how to win. I can’t help but wonder how much of a difference Ian Adams would have made.

Chris: Hats off to the two bands at the View/Rouge game. However, the Rouge Dancers stole the show!

SMCC

Frank: Everyone from SMCC I have asked has told me that this team is more of a wagon offensively than the 2014 team, and one of those I asked played on the 2014 team.

Chris: Nice win Falcons! Any truth to the rumor that Navarre Field was brighter on Friday?

Bonus:

Frank: Make sure you listen to Bring The Wood. Also make sure to rate, review, and subscribe.

Chris: Great statewide football stuff on that podcast. Very easy to find BTW, just click on the podcast drop-down above

Frank: Lots of upsets in the second round.

Chris: Yep, saw that GRCC victory coming over West Catholic a mile away. Didn’t see the Mona Shores or Unity Christian results coming.

Frank: A text I got from Jeff Hardy (not the wrestler) on Friday Night, “These rematch games are brutal.” That holds true for both teams in a rematch.

Chris: Thanks to all the Riverview folks who said hi on Friday. I really enjoy talking to people. (The pepperoni roll was solid, but I say bring back the double cheeseburger).

Frank: So much for my picks to win it all in D2 (Mona Shores) and D4 (Unity Christian).

Chris: Byron Center and South Christian are no joke.

Frank: My sleeper pick of Gladwin in D5 looks good.

Chris: What is a Flying G anyway?

Frank: With the loss by Kingsley, only D3 (Forest Hills Central), D4 (Harper Woods), and D5 (Frankenmuth) have a chance at repeating.

Chris: If I’m a betting man (and I’m not), I don’t expect any of the remaining three to repeat either. JLC will, but technically that would be a three-peat although in a different division.

Frank: Since I was given a credential, I’ll be at the Friendly Confines of Navarre Field again this week. Hopefully there’s a Saturday game I can attend that’s close by too.

Chris: I plan to be at the Carlson/OLSM game on Friday night.

    • Yeah yeah. Same thing everybody said last year against big bad Dexter.
I think the boys will show up and make O-lake FEEL THEM

  • We had 1/2 our starting secondary and a DL out. Those are all state level guys. Officiating was bad, but not FR level bad. 3 phantom penalties at key times, play 21, 29, and 80. For 21, the guy who pulled the flag didn't even have the view to see, so he was guessing and on the other two, there was no penalty at all. I've seen worse, much worse. Thing that cost the team was the second half fumble while down 12-8. They were driving at midfield and Rouge was looking tired, then Rouge got the ball back at the end of a ten yard run. They were a beatable team. I think with Adams, Stuck, and Timmerman healthy and on defense, they win by 2 TD. We really couldn't stop the pass missing those guys out there. Timmerman played offense, but not quite as strong as his usual self due to the injury. Just didn't have enough time at the end. Scoring on that defense took at least 5-1/2 minutes if not more. Rouge played it very well. When your front seven is that big and that fast, you can leave 3 guys standing there where the safties are to make the play and they did. It's a disappointing end to a season that really could have been a big one if we didn't have the injuries. We just don't have the depth to replace losses like that. Grateful for one playoff win against a good football team. We had a lot of luck run our way these last two years and eventually it runs out when that miracle at the end didn't happen.

    • I sat on the Rouge side. They thought the officials favored Riverview. As a neutral observer, I thought the officials were fine.

      • For the most part, they were, but 2/3 on that first Rouge drive really got us early. No guarantee that Rouge wouldn't have thrown a pass on a 4th down and not got it. We haven't been able to defend the pass on Adams side of the field for half the season. His abilities sure have been missed. We really needed every break we could get. There was one big call that did favor us, the rest of the Rouge penalties were little ones like false starts and jumping off sides. The stuff that's obvious that they call on everybody.

      • The pass interference called on rouge -4th down play -view scored on that drive by the way was horrible

      • The team lost because it turned the ball over and was slowed enough on offense to not have the time to score at the end. Credit goes to the other team. I do point out bad officiating when the penalty didn't happen. It's easy to forward and rewind a play in slow motion afterword to see if it was a good or bad call. In any playoff game, that's a serious issue. The bad officiating hurt any chances we had at an early stop.

  • Frank,
Come on over to Hudson and see the Hudson/Schoolcraft game. We’re 1:00pm on Saturday

    Go Eagles!

    • I will be there Saturday! Let me know where you’ll be seated at.

This will be a fun double dip weekend of football.

  • Clinton ran into an entire different animal Friday night than they did in week 1. SMCC is looking like the best team ever in my book. Clinton is young and they’re gonna be tough next year. Already looking forward to week 1 next year!

      • Agree! Very good but still a job at hand….nothing is given…you have to take it…..finish the job men! Falcon pride!
