Regional Edition: Our Thoughts, Not Yours

By Chris Schultz and Frank Vajcner

Each week, Chris and Frank will give their thoughts on our blog teams. For the most part, one will generally keep things on the rails, while the other goes a little off the wall. We also expanded outside of the blog area this week.

Blog Teams:

Carlson

Frank: The defense played well for the Marauders, considering that they were punching above their weight class.

Chris: Thats the point of divisions, everyone is the same size. (We all know what you mean though)

Flat Rock

Frank: Graham Junge was cooking in his last home game. So was the Mighty Ram defense.

Chris: I heard Frank was a celebrity in Flat Rock on Friday

SMCC

Frank: The last time the Falcons put up consecutive 50-burgers was the 2014 playoffs. We all know what happened after that.

Chris: Frank are you suggesting that a Head Coach may retire at the end of the season?

Other Regionals:

Frank: So will Connor Stallions get a job at one of the remaining playoff teams?

Chris: Connor who?

Frank: None of my D1 Final Four were correct.

Chris: I still have one alive

Frank: Gary’s pick of Groves to win it all in D2 looks good.

Chris: I wonder if Gary was anticipating a poor officiating call?

Frank: DeWitt just scored again.

Chris: How did they do that?

Frank: Zeeland West and DeWitt is the de facto D3 State Championship.

Chris: I think Detroit King may have something to say about that.

Frank: Niles coach Scot Shaw will get to coach at his old stomping grounds next weekend. Advantage?

Chris: I think Paul Hess and Sam Rucker give him the advantage.

Frank: My sleeper pick of South Christian continues to look good.

Chris: Tooting your own horn Frank?

Frank: Chris and I got all four D5 teams right for the Final Four.

Chris: Will the Rams shock the state?

Frank: Lumen Christi is 1 of 1, but I had a friend tell me that Ida could have beaten them and made it to the semifinals.

Chris: I think the JLC/Ida game was the state championship game

Frank: There are a lot of blog readers in Hudson. Despite the loss to Schoolcraft, the Tigers could be a team to watch next season. And everyone needs to remember the name Beckett Campbell.

Chris: I think Hudson is a team to watch every season.

Frank: Reports of Fowler’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Chris: I wouldn’t be surprised if Beal City parties like it’s 2009

Bonus:

Frank: Make sure you listen to Bring The Wood. Also make sure to rate, review, and subscribe.

Chris: BTW is not just for football geeks!

Frank: Once again, I have to thank the folks at Flat Rock and Hudson for their hospitality this weekend.

Chris: Frank you are one of a kind and everyone’s favorite high school sports geek!

Frank: The plan is for me to make the trip to Harper Creek next weekend. Oddly enough, I officiated a game there back in Week 2. They have very nice facilities.

Chris: I will be making the short trek to Westland to see the Mighty Rams. Tailgate starts at 9:00 am.

Frank: Next week is already Week 0 for basketball. I have a scrimmage Tuesday as Bedford hosts Onsted and Jefferson.

Chris: I love basketball season. Still wondering what an FNV following there would be if we covered basketball.

Frank: If you would have told me that the Lions would win a game where Jared Goff throws five interceptions, I would have told you to get tested.

Chris: Me too!

  • CC wins 29- 13 Special teams and D are the difference. CC has not seen a Dline like Schoolcraft - Schoolcraft has not seen an Oline like CC should be interesting.
No one in D7 plays faster on Defense than CC . That along with Great Special Teams forge them ahead.

  • Why is everyone comparing the 25 rams to the 24 rams that makes no sense how you can compare to completely different teams and we are looking at one of the BEST OFFENSIVES in flat rock history…

    • I don’t see anyone comparing either team.
However, if I did, the 24 version is definitely better than the 25 team.
Look, all the big numbers were against mediocre to very poor teams.
The only real tough game was against Div 7, SMCC and you got slaughtered in that game.
Riverview was decent, but another loss.
      We will find out Saturday.

    • Best offensives in FR history? Sure. However Notre Dame Prep is on a completely different level this year. NDP by 2 scores easily

    • My biggest question mark with this year was the change in the offense. Personally I’m not the biggest fan running from the gun every play but they’ve proven me wrong with this offense. I did get a little worried at the beginning of the Leslie game with the ball handling of the snaps but they settled in and scored at will from then on. This team is loaded with talent and they play together-no selfishness. Coaches have done a great job with that but that’s SMCC football-THE TEAM! This weekend is gonna be tough though-execute and do your thing! Fly to the ball and hit hard like you’ve done all year and you’ll be just fine!

      • I am worried about the Falcons offensive line vs. Schoolcraft defensive line this weekend. The Schoolcraft def line looked HUGE on the NFHS broadcast. Maybe the biggest we have seen since Riverview. Also worry about how the 2 hour bus ride will effect them. Hoping for a Falcons win!

        • Wow ever since June people have questioned or actually worse spoke poorly of the offensive line. The team is 12-0. The line handled all comers including Riverview, Flat Rock and Country Day to name a few.
Maybe they have earned a little respect. Or did the backs go 12-0 on their own
          Unbelievable

          • SMCC’s offensive line is tough, smart and plays hard. They will not disappoint! The Falcon faithful love this line! GO FALCONS!

          • Riverview did a great deal to help them win that game. The offense had to go just 12 yards for one of those three scores the offense had against Riverview.

    • A couple of fellow huron league dads that I talked to expected a better season than last year for the Falcons but we all thought we had good chance of beating them then they beat all of our teams by 3+ touchdowns… Definitely didn’t expect the Falcons to be this dominant but we’re all pulling for them to end their season 14-0

  • For the Rams, those first three playoff opponents have been cheese puffs. This is where the rams will find out if they actually are better than last year.

    • When the measuring stick you are using is a state semi-final game (in back to back years no less) you’re just showing how ignorant and/or bitter you are.

          • Flat Rock can be very physical and wear down a speedy team if they can establish that running game. That's the route they have to take. Go for the 3-5 on the ground and control that clock, and throw the football sometimes, but not all the time.

      • Sorry, I’m not bitter or ignorant.
All I am saying is Flat Rock got dismantled last year by Corruna.
I think this year’s opponent (Notre Dame Prep) is a better team than what Flat Rock faced last year against Corruna.
Is Flat Rock better this year?
I don’t know the answer to that.
They played 2 very good teams this season and lost them both.
They’re about to play another very good team.
        We will see Saturday!
        Go Rams!

        • I was at that ball game last year. That Flat Rock team just didn't seem to have the fight after they went down. I felt like they could do so much better. If the Rams fall behind, they've got to bring the fight to this game. Pretend it's Riverview or something. I've seen the Rams bring that type of fight. It's one thing to go out fighting, and another to go out in a humiliating 50-0 type of blow out. They need to play physical and establish the run. The linemen need to step up big time and smash people. If the Rams lose, they least need to make it look like they belong in that game.

      • Let's be honest here. That was a very easy region without one team that could challenge the rams. This year looks just like last year. D8 Riverview Richard handedly beat your regional championship opponent. That had to be one of the easier regional championship schedules in the state. The Rams are a good football team and that's why they've won all those games, but they really didn't have to beat anybody to get that regional championship. This week, that won't be the case. The rams literally went from playing 3 teams that would finish close to the bottom of the Huron, to one of the best teams in the state.

      • Those first three teams weren’t good football teams. That is the easiest road to a regional championship in D5, and most divisions in this state. Problem is, it goes from 0-60 real quick. The measuring stick would be staying in the game this year. I believe they can, but they’ll have to stay focused and stay away from becoming one dimensional. Flat Rock excels when the passing attack compliments that nice power running game, but if they strictly rely on the pass too often, they’ll get smoked.

    • Notre Dame Prep is a better team than Corrouna was last year.
I hope the Rams stay in the game, but…………

  • Basketball blog would be cool but I’m sure Chris, Gary, and Frank are looking forward to some time off! I’m confused how the SMCC game ended up in Battle Creek?? Is it really because of volleyball? Kinda cool but kinda weird at the same time.

    • It started with football, but was hoops for a season or two. We would have to have complete buy in from the coaches to send requested game info after each game. We wouldnt do videos, but coverage could be there.
