Week 8 Our Thoughts, Not Yours

By Chris Schultz and Frank Vajcner

Each week, Chris and Frank will give their thoughts on our blog teams. For the most part, one will generally keep things on the rails, while the other goes a little off the wall.

Airport

Frank: How much was Chris sweating his prediction? It all comes down to Week 9 against Avondale.

Chris: Step 4 completed by the Jets, more to come?

Bedford

Frank: Beating your rival is always good. Shutting them out is special.

Chris: Bedford “Opens a Can” on Monroe

Carlson

Frank: There was not a rational person who expected a shutout.

Chris: Nice win by the Marauders, but this is not my father in law’s Jags.

Dundee

Frank: There was a part of me that thought that would be ugly, but the Vikings at least showed some pride.

Chris: Sounds like the “Backyard Brawl” was a brawl.

Erie Mason

Frank: Eagles let one slip away.

Chris: Did I predict that Westland would win 21-20?

Flat Rock

Frank: I thought that one would be closer, but the Rams get The Oar back.

Chris: I am probably the only Flat Rock fan that will acknowledge that time ran out at the end of the 1st half.

Grosse Ile

Frank: I’m not beating a dead horse this week.

Chris: Whew…I don’t want to see the horse head ever again.

Huron

Frank: A win should (keyword “should”) come next week.

Chris: Does anyone know what “Sting Pong” is?

Ida

Frank: Dean Thomas is still running wild.

Chris: Ida quickly becoming a team that nobody wants to play

Jefferson

Frank: Truthfully I long for the days when Da Bears are good again.

Chris: At this point, I don’t think anyone can say with a straight face that Jefferson and SMCC are football rivals anymore.

Milan

Frank: In the words of Herm Edwards, “You play to win the game.”

Chris: I always want the team that goes for 2 to win the game.

Monroe

Frank: For anyone wondering, the last time Monroe won less than three games in a season was 1986.

Chris: What is it going to take for the “Sleeping Giant” to awake? I know the answer!

Riverview

Frank: The Colvin Cup may just take up residency on Longsdorf Street.

Chris: I predict a Red Devil victory in week 9.

SMCC

Frank: Ending a nine-year conference title drought is nice, but there are bigger fish to fry.

Chris: I don’t think Catholics fry fish on Fridays until Lent.

Summerfield

Frank: Summerfield just scored again.

Chris: Gotta love these Bulldogs

Whiteford

Frank: Another Ruddy to the rescue.

Chris: “Heart of a Champhion”

Bonus:

Frank: Make sure you listen to Bring The Wood. Also make sure to rate, review, and subscribe.

Chris: A Big shout out to the son of my guy D-Jack who had 3 interceptions in Cass Tech’s victory over King at Ford Field.

Frank: Dan Campbell should send Chris Christie a box of tissues.

Chris: Dare I say we have a rivalry game next Saturday?

Frank: It’s time for Brad Holmes to drop a line from Les Snead and go get a certain edge rusher who is native to Lapeer.

Chris: Forward Down the Field!

Frank: Has anyone ever watched a game where there were more turnovers between both teams than penalties called?

Chris: This may be the best streak of good weather that we have had for high school football in a long time.

Frank: Week 9 is Judgement Week for the bubble teams.

Chris: Let’s go Lakers!

This edition of Our Thoughts, Not Yours goes out to Bedford Athletic Director Mark German, who is retiring.

  • Gary -

Will "The Nest" ever get built??? Maybe in the next couple of years??? You would think will all the social media buzz they put out a year or so ago and ask for additional donations we would see some ground being moved by now...but that is not the case. The current field is a complete embarrassment to play on...with all the outside funding this school has it is also an embarrassment this project hasn't moved forward.

    • Hi Todd,

      The endzones are nice!

Field has been around for a long while. Looks great today. Was over there this morning. Visiting teams only spend 90 minutes on it, every 2 years, if it is looked at as you describe. But us Falcon Fans love it! Navarre is home. Proudly she stands. Many a SMCC victory she has witnessed. Proudest of all was beating Jefferson twice in one season in 1987. I was on that team. Only time both teams played each other twice in the same season. Both wins at Navarre. Great rivalry.

Looks as good as when your SMCC team won the state championship in 1991

  • Da BearS!!!

On a very tight pace to be worse then last year points scored and points gave up it’s getting close to last years numbers

That said in 2 years they will be Huron league champs

To many dues paid and to much talent

    2026 HL champs
    Da Bears

  • Smcc players need to not get so emotional they seem to not do good in games where penalties are being thrown (any game with talking going on) and yes I’m saying they played bad against Jefferson.

  • Airport is ranked #39 in playoff points in division 4. What are the chances they move up 7 spots with a win over Avondale?

    • Airport would obviously be doing themselves a huge favor if they won. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening.

      • Chris, Avondale just might be a paper Yellowjacket. Their league looks disgusting! I don't give any more credence to wins vs Berkley, Ferndale, Royal Oak and Pontiac when compared to Grosse Ile, Jefferson, Huron and Milan...but the MHSAA dure does. Airport has improved each week of the season. Don't leave the tarmac yet, these Jets are ready to soar!

        • Avondale by 4 scores lol that's a good one. If Avondale played Airport's schedule they would be 4-4 or 3-5 right now.

          • Avondale has the better wins, but in Airport's defense, they have either played really good teams, or really bad teams. Beating this year's Milan team in overtime is not impressive at all. It will take a higher level of ball than that to get this done. Milan is about the same caliber as Grosse Ile in my opinion. Unless Airport plays the game of its life, 28-14 Avondale. if they win, they should be in.

  • Watched the Ida/Dundee game Friday night and I agree wholeheartedly that the Bluestreaks could be a sleeper pick in the playoffs. From what I saw, their only weakness is tackling. Many Dundee players were throwing off Ida defenders fairly easily. Those kids need to wrap up when tackling, and they could go far.

    • Sure, it doesn't help the league or the playoff situation when a fellow league team is that bad year after year.

  • I do think Grosse Ile will have a chance to win the game against Cabrini if they can show up ready to play hard. Cabrini is coming off a 7-6 win over an 88 student school who hadn't had a football team in 15 years playing it's first game of the year. That's a level of bad that we can't even imagine in the Huron even beyond what we've seen out of Devils and Bears lately. The Devils have a qb who can make some throws, a small, fast and shifty rb, and a real good receiver in #3. That might just be enough. I get the idea that most of those teams on the Cabrini schedule outside of Everest wouldn't win a single game in the HL.

    • That is untrue about Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes. They have had a an 11 man football program every year since 1960.

      • It shows some other team with 88 students in the school on the website I was looking at, ok, I see, it was Waterford. I still give the Devils a chance, although when you lose that much, just beating anybody is getting over the hump because of the mental mindset always losing brings. The Monarchs have been on the other side, the Devils haven't.

    • Pulling for GI to end their season on a positive note! Credit to those kids and coaches for sticking it out and playing every Friday night. Better days coming for the Red Devils!

  • With Blissfield most likely making it in, I could see SMCC getting sent up to Millington. Not saying that is likely but would not be surprised because of the amount of division 7 playoff teams in south east Michigan. Cannot wait to see how this pans out.

  • Dear Football Gods - next week please ensure the Refs clocks are synced with scoreboard!! One second completely killed the momentum - so thank you for that!

    • Fair for sure. However, Huron was beaten in the trenches on both sides of the ball all night, period. Flat Rock was just bigger and stronger at the point of attack. Game over.

    • Would have lost by 2 tuddys and not 3 got shut out the second half got handed the ball in the 10 yard line should have never happened you clown

      • First off - it was tied at the half & it killed the momentum. You have no idea how it would have ended. “Clown” that’s classy but then again you’re from Flatrock so can’t expect much. Good luck in the playoffs

      • I’ll keep that to myself, because I think ultimately everyone in Monroe knows. I do think you have great people coaching football over there at Monroe from what I can tell and it seems as if your new Athletic Director understands some things.
