We now head over to Herr Road, where changes have happened again. Kyle Reed becomes the third head coach in three seasons for Monroe. How does the schedule shake out for the beginning of the Reed era?
2023 Schedule:
Aug 24: @ Jackson
Aug 31: @ Ann Arbor Huron
Sept 8: Ypsilanti Lincoln
Sept 14: Ann Arbor Skyline
Sept 22: @ Saline
Sept 29: Ann Arbor Pioneer
Oct 6: @ Dexter
Oct 13: Bedford
Oct 20: Riverview
Gut-Check Game: We won’t have to wait long to see where the Trojans are at, as they open the season with two road games. The first of which will be a long trek to Tony Dungy Field to face Jackson (more on that later), but the bigger test will come in a road trip to Ann Arbor Huron, The River Rats handed the Trojans a 40-0 shutout loss last season, which was the Trojans’ first to any opponent not named Saline since a 2013 38-0 loss to Lansing Sexton. If the Trojans get at least a split, while being competitive against Huron, expectations will rise. They will be even higher if they reach 4-0 by the time a road trip to Saline comes around in Week 5.
Trap Game: Lincoln might be the home opener, but the pesky Railsplitters never seem to go down easy against the Trojans, as the last two meetings have been decided by identical 28-21 results. If the Trojans enter this one at 2-0, Reed will have to keep his bunch level-headed.
Snoozer: I hate to partake in the striking of a deceased equine, so just refer to Bedford’s analysis on the other Ann Arbor schools. Monroe outscored both by a combined 91-21 last season.
Non-Conference Challenge: The Trojans will open the regular season at Jackson, and end at home against Riverview. The Vikings went 6-5 last season, which included a 35-20 defeat of the Trojans, and made the playoffs for a fifth consecutive year. The Pirates are coming off of a 12-1 season where they reached the State Semifinals, as well as beat the Trojans 49-27. And of course, there was still plenty of smack talk in the comments during the week of last season’s meeting.
Notable: The Week 4 meeting with Skyline will be held on a Thursday, due to the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah…Monroe is the lone team on the blog who does not face any different opponents from last season…In all three meetings with Jackson, the road team has won.
Final Thoughts from Frank: Expectations for the Trojans will be sky-high if they are at least 3-1 or better by the time they have to travel to Saline. In order to get back to the playoffs, the Trojans might have to steal one in October to get to 5-4 or 6-3.

Find it very interesting that former Monroe HFC and current teacher Dave Mifsud was quoted in the Monroe News that he needed significant time away from being a head coach in Jan 2023 … yet he applied all over SE MI , did not get hired at Canton then landed the Woodhaven HFC gig in May 2023- so much for significant time off from being a HFC … not even a season.. that’s not significant time or maybe it is to him.. he jumps around more Backups in the college football transfer portal..
Would love to see them meet up in the playoffs and Monroe take care of business
It is absolutely embarrassing that Monroe High loses to a Huron League team
15-20 years ago you would need to put together a HL all star team to beat Monroe HS
I am pulling for Coach Reed, if anyone can get them back, he can.
I just hope the administration supports him and gives him what he needs to build it.
I think more than likely Monroe will be 3-1 by the time they meet Saline. I don’t have enough info on Jackson to predict how good they will be this year, but my gut feeling is that Monroe will lose again. And Ann Arbor Huron will be much different this year, and not in a good way. They have to replace most of their starters, which a good amount went on to play college football, and they have new head coach who hasn’t been very successful. I think Monroe will win this time around, if not it’ll be close. I’m even more confident about them beating Lincoln and Skyline. But I don’t think the matchup with Saline will be close at all. Saline’s offense is a lot more experienced this year, and I don’t see Monroe slowing them down, plus the Trojans just don’t show up like they should against Saline. Didn’t expect them to lose 40-0 last year, or 34-7 in 2021, or 48-21 in 2020. After week 4, I don’t see Monroe winning any more games besides Pioneer. Dexter’s a good team which blew out the Trojans the last two meetings, Bedford will be good this year, and so will riverview ( I think).
