2023 Schedule Analysis: Huron Chiefs

By Frank Vajcner

It’s off to the banks of the mighty Huron River to take a look at New Boston Huron. The Chiefs had a solid start to the Tom Hoover era. How does the schedule play out for Year Two?

2023 Schedule:

Aug 24: Livonia Churchill

Aug 31: SMCC

Sept 8: @ Milan

Sept 15: Riverview

Sept 22: @ Jefferson

Sept 29: Airport

Oct 6: @ Grosse Ile

Oct 13: @ Flat Rock

Oct 20: @ Detroit Henry Ford

Gut-Check Game: It’s a recurring theme with Huron League teams, and in this case, look no further than Week 4 when Riverview comes to town. Not only have the Pirates won their last 23 Huron League games, but they are the only team that the Chiefs have not defeated since my tenure at the blog began in 2017. This would be a prime opportunity for Hoover’s bunch to knock over the apple cart in the conference, as the Pirates will have a tough stretch ahead (more on that in a later post).

Trap Game: A Week 3 road trip to Milan is a potential look-ahead spot with Riverview the following week. The Chiefs squeaked out a 13-12 win over the Big Reds last season at home. What makes this look more like a land mine is that four of the last six meetings in the regular season have been decided by one score. Also, beware of a Week 6 trip to “The Island” to face Grosse Ile, as that one comes a week before a rivalry game with Flat Rock.

Snoozer: Livonia Churchill comes to town to open the season. The Chargers went 2-7 last season with wins over woebegone Plymouth and Wayne Memorial. (Chris disagrees, the Chargers hadn’t had a losing season in 9 years up until 2022. Henry Ford is his snoozer. They lost to GI 42-14).

Non-Conference Challenge: There isn’t much sizzle to the out-of-conference slate. Besides Churchill, the Chiefs visit Detroit Henry Ford in Week 9. The Trojans have posted back-to-back 5-4 seasons.

Notable: Both non-conference opponents will be first-time meetings on the gridiron…The Chiefs will not have any home games after September, pending playoff seeding.

Final Thoughts from Frank: If the Chiefs can start 3-0 by the time Riverview visits, their confidence will be soaring. Three straight on the road to end the regular season could be tricky, and could make a difference for postseason hopes.

  • Obviously just my opinion but I would call Huron a 7 to 10 point underdog in this game with Churchill.

  • I'd like to provide further clarification on my snoozer. The KLAA East had only three playoff teams (Belleville, Livonia Franklin, and Dearborn). Churchill only beat Wayne Memorial in conference play, who was among one of the worst teams in the state. The Chargers also gave up a 50-burger to a three-win Canton. Said Canton team also got blanked by a 2-7 Plymouth team, whose only other win was against 1-8 Plymouth Salem.

In short, I put more weight on what a team has done recently, unless I see that they have played a murderer's row the previous season.

    • Churchill a snooze game? Really? So going off of your logic, let’s put Huron in the KLAA. Maybe a 1-2 win team at best. This article is poorly written.

      • Because you don't agree, doesn't mean the article was poorly written.
Most agree it's not a snoozer but Frank did give us his logic.
