Carleton Airport Jets 2022 Team Preview

In their 2021 campaign, the Jets won the games they were supposed to win and lost they games they were supposed to lose. Will Coach Duffy(22-23), now in his 6th year, take his what looks to be loaded Jets squad, to the next level? Helping him get there will be assistant coaches, Tim Duffy Jr., Derek Anderson, Gabe McMillan, Jeff Goins, Matt Pinter, Justin Nye, Josh Webb, Frank Stasa III.

RETURNING STARTERS

Offense: Cooper Nye (QB), Jack Mills (RB), Nolan Zajac (TE), Kayden Kull (OL), Drew Van Wasshenova (OL), Chase Johnson (OL), Colin Nowak (WR)

Defense: Nolan Zajac (LB), Kayden Kull (LB), Matt Foor (DE), Gavin Day (DE), Cooper Nye (LB), Kyle Harvall (LB), Jack Mills (DB), Colin Nowak(DB), Drew Van Wasshenova (DL)

1. Cooper Nye, Junior, QB/LB  3 year starter at QB, set school records in 2021 for passing yards and touchdown passes

“This will be Coop’s 3rd season commanding our offense.  He is an extremely gifted and humble young man, and is starting to come into his own as a leader.  He dedicates a lot of time to improving his game in the offseason, he is a special kid.”

Cooper Nye

2. Jack Mills, Junior, RB/DB 3 year starter both offensively and defensively

“Jack is an incredible athlete and a tough young man.  We ask a lot out of him and he does it all at a high level.”

3. Drew VanWasshenova, Senior, OL/DL  3rd year starter, can play every offensive line position

“Drew is the heart and soul of our football team, and will anchor our offensive and defensive lines.  His versatility will allow him to play multiple positions, and he’s one of the best leaders we’ve ever had here.”

4. Nolan Zajac, Junior, TE/Receiver/LB 3 year starter both offensively and defensively

“Nolan will be a big part of what we do this year on both sides of the ball.  He is an extremely tough and intelligent football player.  He will make big plays for us this season in big moments.”

5.) Colin Nowak, Junior, WR/DB Colin is an outstanding route runner and pass catcher. Also a 3 year 2 way starter

“Colin is an electric athlete, and has the ability to make a big play any time the ball is in his hands.”

6.) Kyle Harvall, Senior, RB/LB Kyle has a lot of experience and we see him as a vital to our success

“Kyle has been with us for 3 years, and we are looking to him to impact the game on both sides of the ball.  He is extremely coachable, and has the ability to have a very nice senior season.”

Offensively– “We graduated 2 players that accounted for almost 30 touchdowns in 2021.  With that said, the group we return has the potential to be pretty dynamic offensively.  As always, we have to limit mistakes, and take care of the football.  Up front we will rely on returning offensive lineman Kaden Kull, VanWasshenova, David Satneck and Chase Johnson to lead the way.”

Defensively– “Defensively, we will be led by safety, Jack Mills.  Other defensive players that will be key to our success in 2022 are Gavin Day, Kaden Kull, Matt Foor and Brett Moore.  Our defensive staff is dong a nice job putting them in spots to be successful and getting them to fly around.

Coach Duffy’s Thoughts on the League: “There are no weeks off in the Huron League.  Milan, Riverview and SMCC all seem to reload every year.

FNV Outlook: No other way to say it, this is the year of the Jet. Yes they lost Hammond, however, Airport returns excellent players at every level. Cooper Nye will be extremely dangerous and the Mills kid is tough as nails. I’ve said in our FNV circle, that Coach Duffy has quietly done a nice job with his Jets. They have yet to win the big game, but I think this is the year that changes. When Airport has a quality team, this blog is a buzz. Jet’s fans are hungry for a return to the glory days of the 2000’s. I’m looking forward to a fun and exciting season, and Airport will definitely help provide that.

  • The schedule is tough but the potential is there to be a playoff team with all the third year players on the roster. Like Gary said it's time to beat at least one of the big boys in the Huron league. Looking forward to a good game Thursday vs Ida and what should be a fun season.

  • If these comments are a sign of things to come from the good ol’ Carleton faithful I CANNOT WAIT for this season to start! Airport mom’s are back on the blog!

  • This is the Jets year. Coach Duffy has been building to this group for years now. I expect them to take home the Huron League title or at least finish in 2nd.

  • Mills kid is really really good and really an athlete all around, very tough. Airport is poised for a good season with those juniors leading the way

  • I must admit that I completely agree with you here Gary. I have a lot of confidence this year that Airport can be the best in the Huron league behind Milan. Looking forward to watching Airport take down the Falcons!!!

  • This is the first time I’ve seen any participation with the blog from Airport…only took 6 years…
