When the Grosse Ile Red Devils travel to Summit Academy in Huron Township on Friday it will be the first ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. John Bodner’s team enters the game with a 5-3 record while Matthew Swain’s Dragon team enters as the #1 seed in the district with a 7-1 record.
Grosse Ile
Grosse Ile is quietly having a solid season on the island and boast an explosive offense that features players having great seasons. Senior QB Nate Brown has thrown for nearly 1,500 yards this season with 20 TD’s while rushing for another 340 yards and 4 TD’s. Senior RB Joe Pizzo (All FNV 2019) has rushed for 1038 yards and 14 TD’s and has caught 28 passes with two more scores. Sophomore Tyler Swick and senior Keegan Mott have combined for 52 catches for 872 yards and 12 TD’s.
Defensively, the Red Devils are led by a trio of linebackers in seniors Trey Swick, Luke Taulbee and Nick Esordi. Swick leads the way 72 tackles and 2 Int’s. Junior Jake Reno and senior Curtis Heard are big solid players on the defensive line while sophomore Tyler Fraczek heads an athletic secondary.
Summit Academy
The Dragons enter Friday’s game with GI at 7-1. They were the winners of the Charter School Conference (CSC) West Division and their only blemish was a 42-6 loss to Division 6 power Michigan Collegiate in the CSC title game. Summit is led by QB Charles Coy III. He has plenty of weapons in RB’s Dylan Purry and Dayshawn Jones-Johnson. Terry Curtis is a tall target who is one of Coy’s main weapons in the passing game.
Defensively, the Dragons are giving up just 12 ppg, but with the exception of Michigan Collegiate this will be the best offense Summit has seen all season. DE’s Cameron Earnest and Jaychone Jackson team with DT Elijah Williams to form a solid defensive line while DB Jeremiah Dallas-Martin along with DB Jones-Johnson and LB Purry give the Dragons an athletic back seven.
FNV Outlook: This should be a fun to watch, high scoring game between two solid offensive teams. You could see a score up in the 40’s and don’t be surprised if this game comes down to special teams play.
