Flat Rock 2020 Schedule Analysis

We now take a drive up Telegraph Road to pay a visit to the alma mater of our own Chris Schultz to do the 2020 schedule analysis of the Flat Rock Rams. Flat Rock will be looking to recapture the glory from three seasons ago when they last made the playoffs. How does the schedule set up?

2020 Schedule:

Aug 27: @ Redford Thurston

Sept 3: @ Jefferson

Sept 11: Riverview

Sept 18: Milan

Sept 25: @ SMCC

Oct 2: Grosse Ile

Oct 9: @ Airport

Oct 16: @ New Boston Huron

Oct 23: Ann Arbor Huron

Gut-Check Game: Riverview. Buck Reaume’s squad arguably could not have gotten a tougher draw for their home opener, as the Pirates are considered a favorite in the Huron League. If the Rams want to “find a way” to have a successful season, knocking off an upper-echelon team would be a nice place to start.

Trap Game: at Jefferson. The week prior to a visit from Riverview, the Rams take a trip to Marc Cisco Field to play the Bears. Even though the Rams defeated the Bears 28-16 last season, Jefferson has managed to get out of the Huron League basement. And with Riverview looming in the following week, the Rams can’t afford to overlook a tilt with the Bears.

Non-Conference Challenge: The Rams travel to Redford Thurston to open the season. The Eagles went 8-3 last season, and qualified for the playoffs for the ninth time in the last 12 seasons. Thurston also defeated the Rams 26-20 in overtime last season in a wild finish.

Notable: The Rams are the third of four teams on the blog who have the same schedule as last season. 

Thoughts from Frank: 1976, 1990, and 2017. Those are the years Flat Rock has made the playoffs. That’s an average of 27.5 years between playoff appearances. Getting back to the postseason this year looks like a tall order from a schedule standpoint, especially with Weeks 5-8 being three out of four on the road.

Thoughts from Chris: Going on the road the first two weeks of the season against a solid program like Thurston and a hungry Jefferson program could set the tone for a long 2020 if the Rams slip up. The schedule doesn’t get easier from there with Riverview, Milan and SMCC looming in weeks 3-5.

Thoughts from Gary: I give Flat Rock credit with their non-league opponents. Thurston is a larger school and has a solid program built. AA Huron, although they have trouble beating schools it’s size, is a challenge for the school the size of Flat Rock. The Huron League slate is always tough, with that, the Rams have a very challenging schedule.
