SMCC Falcons Schedule Analysis

It’s now time to head to Gary Hauf’s alma mater for our next team in the Schedule Analysis series. SMCC made another run to the Regional round last season, but came up just short against Cassopolis. Does the schedule set up for another postseason trip? Let’s dive in.

Aug 29 Madison Heights Madison

Sept 6 Airport

Sept 13 @ Milan

Sept 20 Riverview

Sept 27 @ Flat Rock

Oct 4 @ Huron

Oct 11 Grosse Ile

Oct 18 @ Jefferson

Oct 25: open date

Gut-Check Game: Madison Heights Madison. How’s this for an opener? MHM has qualified for the playoffs for the last 14 seasons, and was the state runner-up in Division 7 last season. Oh, and let’s not forget that both schools met in the 2017 Regional Championship, where it was the Eagles who squeaked by the Falcons 22-20 in an instant classic. This is the biggest season opener for any team on the blog this season, bar none. A win by the Falcons, and it will be time to put them in the conversation for best team in Division 7.

Trap Game(s): There are plenty of potential land mines in the Huron League, but three games in September stick out. The Falcons will host Airport in Week 2, right after their huge season opener. Adam Kipf will have to guard his team against a letdown, especially with a trip to Milan looming in Week 3. Speaking of that, Milan has had the Falcons’ number for the last two seasons, including last season where it was the Big Reds who prevailed in a 26-21 thriller. There’s also a trip to Flat Rock in Week 5 that looms as a stumbling block. The Rams gave the Falcons fits at Navarre Field last season, but it was SMCC who pulled out a 28-27 win in the final seconds.

Snoozer: There are no snoozers.

Non-Con Challenge: Madison Heights Madison. See above.

Notable: The Falcons will only play eight games, leaving Week 9 as a chance to get some much-needed rest.

Thoughts from Frank: We won’t have to wait long to see what the Falcons are made of. After the opener, the month of September is pretty tough, with back-to-back games at Milan and home against Riverview. October is much more manageable, with Grosse Ile being the lone game that appears challenging. If the Falcons can get through the first five weeks with no losses (or even just one loss), you can count on them to make another deep run in the playoffs.

  • This team starts out tough against Madison Heights Madison. The Eagles are a good team. Septembers also gonna be tough as they have to play at Milan and then turn around that next week and play against Riverview. They’re gonna be in the Playoffs, but it just depends where they come in at.

  • SMCC has some promising figures this year. Big man who used to play at Monroe Caleb Dale has the size and athleticism to make a difference on the CC line. Caden Smith, one of the fastest track runners in the state will also be helping the Falcons out this year by adding some speed they desperately needed. Plus, many returning seniors. Watch out for the falcons this year!

  • If I was a betting man the falcons appear to be in line to go back to division 6 this season if they are to make the playoffs. Interesting enough the crown for division 6 could be wide open as lumen christi might just drop down to division 7. The opener will be an interesting one.
