Huron Chief’s Schedule Analysis

Next Frank heads over to New Boston. Huron must break in, yet another new coach with the abrupt departure of Tim Spiess.

Schedule:
Aug 24 Redford Thurston
Aug 31 Jefferson
Sept 7 @ Airport
Sept 14 Grosse Ile
Sept 21 @ SMCC
Sept 28 Milan
Oct 5 @ Riverview
Oct 12 Flat Rock
Oct 19 @ Garden City
Gut Check Game: at Airport. There are plenty of tough games on the slate, but I’m going with Airport. Last year, the Chiefs won a 31-30 thriller at the horn. Now they must venture to Carleton to face an improved Jets team for their first road test of the season.
Trap Game: Milan. The Big Reds come to town in Week 6, a week after the Chiefs visit SMCC. In addition, the game precedes a trip to Riverview the following week. Even though the Chiefs won in Milan last season, this is not a game to sleep on, as the Big Reds also figure to be fighting for a playoff spot.
Snoozer: Garden City. See Flat Rock analysis.
Non-Con Challenge: Redford Thurston. The Chiefs lost to the Eagles last season in the regular-season finale. This year, the two teams will open the season in New Boston. Thurston made it to the second round of the playoffs last season.
Notable: The Chiefs drew a brutal road schedule in conference play, with road trips to SMCC and Riverview.
Final Analysis: Chad Smith is the Chiefs’ fourth coach in four years, and he won’t have an easy start to the season. September is a brutal month, with road trips to Airport and SMCC sandwiching a visit from Huron League sleeper Grosse Ile. October doesn’t start much easier with a trip to Riverview in Week 7. If Huron can qualify for the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season, it will have been well-earned.
Thoughts from Chris: Not even sure what to say about Huron’s schedule other than there are no gimmees this season. They can’t afford to overlook anyone this season and that includes week 9 opponent Garden City.
Thoughts from Gary: Much like Grosse Ile, Huron’s schedule offers some relief early in the season, with home games vs Thurston, Jefferson and GI, giving the Chiefs time to gel under new HC Chad Smith.  Road trips to SMCC and Riverview await in weeks 5 and 7, cementing one of the tougher schedules in the league. Week 9 might be for all their playoff marbles as they head up Middlebelt to take on the Cougars of GC.

  • I keep hearing rumors Huron has this great QB? Heard even Michigan is looking st him? Just rumors but can someone help me out I don’t know who this kid is?

  • I hope Huron has found their long term coach. Chad Smith is young and knowledgeable. Also, a great all around person. He could be a good fit, if Huron is patient with the growing pains of a brand new head coach.

  • Chris, as an assistant coach of a team on your blog. I appreciate you monitoring the comments as you do. I personally know almost every head coach in the county and many assistants. Everyone of them are great people and are coaching because they love being around kids and working hard for them. We all understand some years we have it, some years we don’t. Not going to mention my team but this year we will have it.

  • I appreciate the Huron comment, but I can’t post stuff that calls people sleazy. Also Huron has had 100 players in the program the last 3 or 4 years. I don’t think there is any truth that the person you mentioned will be on the staff or anywhere near practice or the sideline when the season starts. The other, why not? As for turf, that would be a great idea, but that obviously won’t happen for at least another year.

  • I've picked Huron to win the league a couple seasons because of those reasons. Bites me in the rear every time. Why will it be different going forward?

  • Huron has good numbers in the program from 9 - 12 grade and a good community support system. They will have a fun and exciting year and I predict league champs next year :)
