Grosse Ile Red Devils Schedule Analysis

Next Frank is going island hopping to look at the next team on the list. Grosse Ile had a rough year last season. Can they turn it around? Let’s look at the schedule.
Schedule:
Aug 24 Riverview Gabriel Richard
Aug 30 Airport
Sept 7 @ Jefferson
Sept 14 @ New Boston Huron
Sept 21 @ Flat Rock
Sept 28 SMCC
Oct 5 @ Milan
Oct 12 Riverview
Oct 19 @ Dearborn Heights Crestwood
Gut Check Game: Riverview Gabriel Richard. An early test for the Red Devils, as RGR makes the trip to The Island in Week 1. The Pioneers are coming off of a 9-2 season, which was the best in school history. The Red Devils are 3-0 all time against RGR, with the most recent game being a 40-6 win by Grosse Ile in 2004. Things are a little different now, as the teams are coming off of polar opposite seasons. Can the Devils make a statement early?
Trap Game: at Jefferson. The start of a three game road swing begins with a trip to Jefferson, who will be looking to move past an 0-9 campaign last year. This is not a game the Devils can overlook if they want to prove that they’re back after a down year.
Snoozer: No game really qualifies as a snoozer, as the Huron League slate is brutal.
Non-Con Challenge: Riverview Gabriel Richard. See above.
Notable: A trip to Dearborn Heights Crestwood ends the regular season. The last time Grosse Ile faced them was in 1996…Grosse Ile is one of three teams to play three straight on the road (Weeks 3-5). Flat Rock and Milan are the others.
Final Analysis: Plenty of people in the Huron League believe that Grosse Ile is a dark horse in the Huron League. The Devils will have a tough stretch of road games in September, followed up with two home games in three weeks against Huron League contenders SMCC and Riverview. Both will give the Devils a chance to play spoiler, as well as a chance to bolster a playoff resumé.

Thoughts from Chris: Big fan of GI picking up Gabriel Richard, that should be an opener that the two schools play every year. Look for the Red Devils to be competitive in every game this season regardless of the schedule. Tough to keep a Jon Bodner team down two years in a row. I wouldn’t be surprised if they started 5-0 or 2-3.
Thoughts from Gary: The Red Devil schedule sets up nicely for a fast start.  While I think they will be challenged in their first 5 games, they are all winnable. Their mettle will truly be tested in weeks 6-8, as they take on the forecasted top teams in the league.
