Huron 2017 Preview and Prediction

Huron enters the 2017 season with a new coach after finishing 6-4 while qualifying for the playoffs for the 3rd consecutive season. Veteran coach Tim Spiess arrives from Ohio with a coaching career that has included nearly 250 wins and 3 state championships as an assistant and head coach.

Offensively the Chiefs boast a squad that is very talented at the skill position. The coach’s son, senior Marek Spiess will be the QB after arriving in New Boston with his family this summer.  Huron will run a Wing T set with seniors Reed Smith and Brett McKay getting a bulk of the carries. Senior Phil Martin will be a wideout in the new offense. The line will be anchored by  seniors Colton Tavtigian, Noah Caplinger and Jared Kozlowski.

On defense the Chiefs will be led by senior LB Mike Mitchell and senior DE Drake Pauwels. Coach Spiess’ other son, junior speedster Brennan Spiess will play both LB and safety while junior Brent Wright will play in the secondary and junior Alex Svoboda will play on the defensive line.

Coaches’ Thought: “The biggest challenge facing us is the fact football program has had three different head coaches in three years. Three different philosophies and three different ways of doing things. The players need consistency in their leadership”.

Huron has strung together four straight winning seasons and returns a good nucleus of players from last year’s playoff team. Team speed seems to be the Chief’s strength. If Huron can pick up the new offensive and defensive concepts from the new coaching staff they should have an opportunity for their 5th straight winning season and possibly their first league championship in school history.

Chris’s Pick: Huron 5-2 Overall 6-3

Gary’s Pick : Huron 6-1 Overall 7-2
