  • There was some chatter below about Coach Kipf of SMCC. I have some thoughts.

    1. It is extremely tough to follow a hall of fame legend in Jack Giarmo. Jack averaged 8.35 wins in 17 years. That is absolutely amazing. All of that in a tough huron league (toughest league in the state for a D6 team) and quality playoff opponents. There is just no way to "improve" on that. Its tough to replace a legend.

    2. Coach Kip is 11-5 in his first 2 years. That's pretty darn good. His 5 losses were to teams with a combined record of 37-5. Three of those losses were by 10, 4 and 1. 2 of them on last second plays.

    3. SMCC's enrollment is dwindling. Which makes it tougher to compete with the bigger schools in the HL, when numbers matter so much in the game of football. That's a fact, not an excuse. However, there are 6 sophs starting on varsity and good classes coming up. The cupboard is bot bare.

    4. I get that if you lose its the coaches fault. It has to be or else why even have a coach? So I am sure Coach kipf takes a lot of the blame for a 2-3 start. He is that kind of guy unlike Brian Kelly at Notre Dame.

All in all SMCC is in great hands in Coach Kipf. He cares about his players and the program. I mentioned in previous posts before the year started that SMCC would struggle to get to 5 wins. That looks to be the case. However, SMCC is playing better than I thought they would after graduating a ton of talent the last 2 years. Chris even mentioned the same. The rest of D6 is hoping SMCC doesn't find a way to get to 5 wins.
