Airport (1-4) lost at Flat Rock last week 34-28 while SMCC (5-0) defeated Grosse Ile 35-7. SMCC won last year’s game 28-7 and leads the all-time series 42-10.
Airport continues to be led by senior RB Dylan Meiring. The defense struggled last week against Flat Rock and will have a huge task in stopping the Falcon offense this week.
SMCC continues to put up gaudy numbers on the ground while the defense has given up just 38 points in the last four games.
Both teams are headed in opposite directions. SMCC appears poised for a week 7 showdown with Milan. Pick: SMCC 28 Airport 0

8th graders generally don't lift weights, so when a JV team is mostly freshmen, you won't see the same results as you will after a few years of lifting. Also, schools with a Jr. High program all have kids playing together. CYO has the kids playing against each other, so some of the team building isn't there yet. They will get there. The SMCC program will take care of things. JV coaching staff is doing fine.
SMCC JV dad not worried at all.
How many Freshmen are starting at Airport? it sounds to me like the only true JV team is Huron and the rest of the teams are Freshmen and that's why they're so bad.
pretty impressive if it's true
Over half of the Airport JV starters are freshman. 8 on offense.
I will buy that. I do think there is some correlation between JV and Varsity, but there is a lot more X's and O's that go on in Varsity. I would hope the lifting and practice prep is similar, since that happens at both levels.
Its strange that the 2 best teams in the league, have the 2 worst JV teams so far.
Perhaps Varsity has taken too many kids from throughout the system and weakened the lower levels. This can happen when numbers are low.
SMCC has long lived on the theory of kids playing up there whole athletic career.
So when they do finally play kids their own age and grade, they are much better.
Maybe both JVs are full of Freshman.
Milan is full of freshman. The rest are Sophmores.

It's good to win at anything no matter what level, so doing good on the J.V. is great. However, please understand that it has nothing to do with what happens on the varsity level. This is mainly because of coaching. Good coaching staffs at the varsity level are the difference especially in a league like the Huron. The amount of time that a good varsity staff puts in compared to the J.V. is 100's of hours more with lifting, film work, practice preparation, game preparation etc. The good programs that put in the most time are usually the most successful unless the amount of talent your playing against is noticeably better than you and in this league with the exception of Flat Rock the last 5-6 years, this is just not the case.
8:34am I see your point. Talent has a way of making all coaches look great, there's no contesting that. However, Kipf has a lot of experience as a head coach in the program (Freshman and JV levels) before moving into the Varsity HC job. I don't know nearly as much about the JV coaches but from what I know it's a really new staff. Do I think the talent is lacking on the JV squad too? Yes, like you said, every team has their cycles. I think it'll take a few years before the JV staff gets comfortable and gains traction. 1 year isn't enough to judge an outlook for 2-3 years in the future, but it's a decent projection.
This years SMCC squad is a result of last years coaching staff. Obviously, they are still pretty good. There will be a drop next year. We all have our cycles. Coach Kipf is doing great, but we all know good talent makes a coach look that much better,
Airport will be on the upswing while SMCC will be on the down swing. Sounds like some of the best league parity we have seen in awhile. It will be exciting.
I know my comment is based on what I'm seeing at the JV level, but many times that does give some implications of whats ahead.
SMCC blows Airport out next year easily.
Hey 9:44 you guys better win tomorrow cause Airport will own you the next couple years. The talent level is completely dried up at SMCC after this year. At least the new coach has one decent year cause starting next year IT'S OVER. And you won't have Giarmo to bail you out, he knew the time was right.

9:44-when Airports JV players become Varsity players they will be tough to beat!! In 2 years it will be Airport and Huron at the top of the league. Freshmen and Sophomore classes are loaded at Airport!
