Huron (11-2) is coming off of the best season in school history. The Chiefs won eleven games and made it to the Division 3 semifinal. Both of the Chiefs losses were to eventual state champions Orchard Lake St. Marys and Monroe SMCC.
Huron’s offense will once again be led by Matt Hartwick. The senior QB threw for nearly 1,100 yards last season and ran for another 1,300 while accounting for 25 TD’s. Senior RB Jake Fryer will compliment Hartwick in the backfield after rushing for 980 yards and 12 TD’s. The Chiefs will have an experienced line led by seniors Dale Midkiff and Steven Sinn.
The Chief’s defense will be led by a host of seniors that include linemen Bill Wallaker and Jacob Davis along with LB Steele White and safety Jake Galazka who missed most of last season with a broken arm.
It will tough for the Chiefs to repeat the historical season of 2014, but the Huron does return numerous key players along with a solid 8-1 JV team. The Chiefs open up at Auburn Hills Avondale on Thursday. Prediction: 6-3

Wow. You Huron fans get a little taste of Prime Rib, and you sure don't wanna go back to hamburger, do you?
Let me give a few more details on the Huron scrimmage. First let me say the scrimmages are really early considering the limits on hitting these day. I think the offenses are ahead of the defenses at scrimmage time.
Offense: The line looked very good and their two RB's ran the ball very well. Hartwick was Hartwick, there is a reason he was the Monroe County Offensive Player of the Year last season. The passing game was virtually non-existent at the scrimmage. Kids had a hard time getting open. Hartwick threw a pick six against Southfield Lathrup.
Defense: The line looked very good and running between the tackles will be very hard against the Chiefs. I thought the LB's look a tad slow that day and the CB's looked inexperienced. Galazka (I assuming that was him) looked like his old self out there at FS. Huron will be better than they showed in the scrimmage defensively. The have a very good defensive coordinator
Idle thoughts: Huron will miss Krug and Collins. You cannot replace a first team all state lineman with his motor and brain that easily. Collins will be missed on both sides of the ball. He thought the game so well from both positions he played. He really reminded me of Windham from SMCC last season. Last season with Summit in the opener, the Chiefs had an extra week to iron things out. I don't think they have that luxury this season. Avondale should be a tough test. They play on turf and usually have some D1 athletes on their team. My fear is that they lose the opener and come back and lose a tough one against Airport. Airport gave Huron a fit last season and almost won that game.
Here is what I posted after the scrimmage.
I went out and saw Huron this morning and then caught SMCC over at Trenton this evening. I was suppose to go see Jefferson out at Dundee, but overslept during my afternoon siesta.
Huron looked pretty good offensively although I think most offenses are ahead of the defenses this early in the season. The Chiefs ran the ball very well with two or three different backs. Hartwick didn't carry the ball much, but when he did he was extremely elusive. Both lines looked solid, but they have little depth. Not sure if they have a game breaker at receiver.
SMCC ran a simulated game against a huge Trenton team. I left at halftime with SMCC up 21-6. The Falcons looked very good. The offensive line looked very good along with the defensive line. Riley Woolford is an unblockable stud and they ran off of his side most of the night. Austin Burger looked solid at QB while Justin Carrabino proved why he may be the best offensive player in the league. I didn't stick around for the 2nd half. SMCC kicking game was outstanding.
Interesting to hear about your take on their scrimmages, Chris. I'd be interested in reading a post about what you saw...what impressed you, what worried you, etc.

...I did see the SMCC scrimmage by the way

Chris, can you list the size of the offensive line for Huron?

I dont see Chris "knocking" Huron anywhere... my only beef over the years has been Chris over hyping(just a little) SMCC and down playing Huron. I feel I have to combat that somewhat because I know(as well as Chris) that the players read this blog.
Huron has SMCC at home. The last 3 times at home vs SMCC, SMCC has won all 3 by the scores of 20-19, 12-6, 28-0. Not exactly blowouts. Huron could have easily won in 2009 and 2011. In fact, Im not sure how SMCC pulled those out to be honest.
I would say Huron will be pretty pumped to defend their home turf on SEP 18.

"I have no kids at Huron or in high school for that matter. I just call them like I see them. Can't believe I'm taking gruff for picking Huron 6-3."
I know, right? They must have turned the corner.... a very loooooooong corner it was.

Heard that Huron was very average in the scrimmage. They lost some really good players. Don't have problem with the prediction. The biggest loss will be #52. Absolute beast and one of the best lineman in the state and best lineman in the league last year.
