Milan Preview

Milan (4-5) missed the playoffs last season after finishing 10-1 in 2012 and 2013. This years Big Reds team is senior dominated and appear poised to make a run at a third Huron League title for 5th year Milan Head Coach Jesse Hoskins.

Junior RB Trace Lindeman leads an excellent core of skill players that return for Milan this season.  Lindeman has great football speed and has rushed for nearly 2,400 yards and scored 25 TD’s in his career. Junior Demetrius Barnes returns at QB after seeing time at the position most of the season. Barnes rushed for 463 yards and 5 TD’s. Leading the way on the offensive line this season will be seniors Max Protske and Cody Brassey-Brierley. Senior Cam Elam will be the Big Reds best receiver while senior E.J Medvecz will play a variety of positions in Milan’s offense.

Defensively, Milan will be led by two of the best defenders in the league in LB Cortez Gray and DE Jordan Hendricks. Senior LB Josh Griffin along with fellow senior DB’s Justin York and Eric Price give the Big Reds a defense that is most likely to be much improved over a year ago.

Milan will travel to Marshall for the season opener on August 28th. The Big Reds have talent, but will need to stay away from injuries as they lack depth. Turnovers kept Milan from a winning season last year. If the last two games of 2014 are any indication, Milan should have a great season. Prediction: 8-1

  • Meanwhile, MLive Ann Arbor misses the boat again by publishing this Milan preview that could have been done by anyone who saw any single Milan game last year and had no conversations with the Milan coaching staff or Big Red players this season. No mention of the Lindeman injury, neither. Don't hurt yourselves, writers...

"Milan’s coaching staff is confident it has the talent in place to be a contender once again. Running back Trace Lindeman, a two-time 1,000 yard rusher is at the top of that list, as is All-Huron League standout Cortez Gray. Gray is an every down playmaker who will be utilized in a variety of different ways. Hoskins likes his squad’s big play potential, but during training camp stressed the need for consistency, and discipline."

The article also seemed to omit Coach Hoskins' rough first year in 2011 from his history, but I won't bother reposting that part...

    FWIW, full article at http://highschoolsports.mlive.com/news/article/6745984730857978648/milan-football-team-has-talent-to-bounce-back-from-down-year/

  • A couple of Milan nuggets from the Huron League Preview in the Detroit News (http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/high-school/2015/08/24/huron-league-prep-football-preview/32286615/):

*Milan coach Jesse Hoskins hopes the Big Reds can win a few games during the first four weeks while standout tailback Trace Lindeman is nursing his broken foot. Lindeman suffered his injury during a celebration following his 80-yard TD run in a scrimmage. Lindeman, who rushed for 1,000-plus yards his sophomore and junior years, ran for 225 yards and three TDs in a win over Airport last season.

*Milan tailback/linebacker Cortez Gray (6-1, 190) is being recruited by Mid-American Conference schools after his 110-tackle season his junior year. Gray will be counted on to carry the load from his tailback position after the training camp injury of two-time 1,000-yard rusher Trace Lindeman.

  • Sounds like most of the teams are very talented but thin. It may be who can stay away from injuries. Might be who can stay healthy will have the best chance this year. Numbers are down @ a few schools interesting

  • He is only a junior. I heard he is currently injured with an ankle, but I expect him back by the Riverview game.

  • Trace Lindeman is a fantastic running back and very explosive-and fun to watch. Chris is he only a junior this year?
