• This goes back to the NFL player who made his sons return their participation trophies...

  You don't give rewards for giving it your best shot and not succeeding. You get rewarded by showing up to practice, laying the guy across from you in hitting drills on their rear, and showing the coaches that you mean business and you want a spot on the team. If there is preferential treatment then that must mean that those players are giving in their all every day and every play and making stuff happen. You don't show up to practice or find yourself being 2nd string and 3rd string; then practice harder. Take 1st string head on and make yourself better by challenging someone better. As a coach, you want to win. Winning is all that matters. If you want to be on that field then work harder. I can speak from knowledge of going to Huron; when you showed up all summer and hit the weight room in the off season, you were being looked at. Why should someone who waited til August get played before someone who did continuous work preparing for August all off season? You don't.

  • KC, winning isn't all that matters at the HS level. Many things matter and the job is difficult. Making kids care as much as you do is a tough task. It doesn't happen naturally or overnight.

• Youth leagues often have a minimum snap number, but varsity doesn't. Some coaches use their benches more than others and players have to respond to and reckon with their own role on the team. A discussion I often have with my young players who are not happy with their PT or role centers around the question "What are you going to do about that?"

  I like my players having some ownership of their circumstances. Every practice is an audition, where players can challenge incumbents or find other ways to make the team better. It's very possible those challenges are taking place in Jefferson practices as well. Each day is another opportunity to impress and to give more to the team.

• Coaches will always play the players that they think will give them the best chance to win.. unless there is some sort of disciplinary issue at hand.

• I'm not entirely sure that's true Chris in the bottom half of the league I would say there's a lot more preferential treatment to certain kids and that's the main reason numbers drop. If it's numbers on the sideline your looking for the kids need to have a place even if it special teams.

• You don't think coaches evaluate in practice? No offense, but coaches know what they are doing. If a kid can contribute, then he will play. If they can't, they get an opportunity in mop up time during a game what is lopsided either way.

• LETS GO RAMS!!! WERE GONNA WIN FRIDAY AND THEN WE WILL UPSET THE WHOLE LEAGUE!!!

• Anyone ever wonder why Jefferson's numbers are down? I remember a time when the kids were excited to be on the team... of course they all had a fair shot of seeing some play time instead of being on the sidelines all the time. If you play the same people all the time and have a losing record, may want to consider some of the talent you had on the sidelines.
  Sounds like Huron has a pretty good system of rotating players in all the time.
  Just an observation...

• In regard to numbers. Huron has 26 on freshman, 27 on JV, and 38 on the varsity with all players on varsity being juniors & seniors.

• I believe field advantage means something; when you're at home, your fan base is huge and everyone except 3 bleachers full, are cheering for you to pull out a W; plus some do have choppy home fields but that's MHO. BTW hello all :) I hadn't checked this blog since I saw Chris' post he wasn't doing the blog anymore and now I see it's still going :D
