Flat Rock @ SMCC

SMCC (1-0) is coming off of an impressive 35-13 win over Tecumseh while Flat Rock (0-1) fell 28-21 to Riverview Gabriel Richard. The Falcons won last seasons match up 50-7 and have won 12 consecutive in the series.

Offensively, the Falcons rely on the running game, but do have a feared passing attack with QB Bryce Windham and WR Travis Vuich.  Junior RB Justin Carrabino is one of the best backs to come through SMCC in quite a few years, but is just one of three or four capable backs.

Defense is where the Falcons will hang their hats this season and will likely determine their ultimate success. Senior Trystin Robinson and junior Darius Marks will lead the defense this week against the Rams.

Flat Rock scored 21 points in the opener against GR and that was more than any game last season. The Rams are led on offensive by explosive sophomore Dontel Hampton and junior QB Justin Roberts.

The Ram defense gave up 28 points in the opener and that was certainly much better than the 51 ppg that they gave up last season. This week players like Eric Antolak and Robert Salter on the defensive line will need to step up to stop the Falcon high powered offense.

This is certainly a tough opener for the Rams who are much better than a season ago. This looks like an opportunity for SMCC to get everyone some playing time. Prediction SMCC 49 Flat Rock 7

  • Whats wrong with checkers?
Blocking schemes?? come on this is the Huron league. There are no schemes and formations.

  • A 5-3 defense would do the trick.
With a cover 1 or cover 2 for the occasional pass. This defense would crush their run. Seen it work many times.

  • You're right you're no Guru. Don't you think that for the last 15 years the coaches of this league and others have tried to find a way to stop their offense? It's called an adjustment, you use a different defense, they change their blocking scheme. It's like a game of chess. Unfortunately for Flat Rock I don't think CC will dumb it down to checkers. • I'm no football guru, but it seems to me that the old stunt 4-3from the Pittsburgh Steelers iron curtain days could be effective. It would take away the area between the guards. I'm sure someone else can give a more detailed reason why it would work.

  • It is most likely a long shot for Flat Rock to win, but I'm just waiting for someone to devise a run defense to stop SMCC. I'm not a football guru, but in watching their system, that they have done for years, maybe Coach Oestrike would be the one to do it. Their downfield blocking looks to be the key. What gives? I know SMCC is good at what they do, but with the right defense, you never know. GO RAMS!!
