Jefferson enters the 2014 season with higher expectations after finishing last season with a 1-8 record. Gone from the non-league schedule are football powers Bedford and Tecumseh as the Bears have added Ida and University Prep Science & Math.
Offensively the Bears return five starters and must replace the durable and elusive Elijah Sandore. Look for rugged senior Sean Kirchner to carry the ball behind a solid offensive line that includes seniors center Carter Paddy and TE Eddie Bechard. .Junior QB Justin Kull is expected to lead the offense and has a solid receiving target in senior Brandon Liparato. Look for junior RB Drake Wohlgamuth to get some carries.
The defense will have to improve this season after giving up 39 ppg in 2013. The Bears return seven starters on defense and will be led by senior Nathan Hintz. Expect senior Mike Ballard and sophomore Brandon Sovey to make an impact.
The Bears have a sizable roster of 41 players that includes 26 juniors and could be a year away from making an impact in the league. Jefferson will be able to score this season, but the hopes will rely on the defense. Prediction 4-5

As luck would have it, I was able to see much of the Jefferson scrimmage with the varsity, JV, and frosh teams participating.
To me, the most interesting development was the public announcement declaring the T-formation dead (here I thought they were running flexbone) and introducting in its place the new Pistol offense. The wacky PA announcer actually declared the T dead and ushered in the era of the Pistol. Maybe long suffering fans will get their wish of Jefferson taking to the air more.
On the field, the center was having trouble with the snap at first, which derailed everything early on. As soon as that got ironed out, the offense performed better. I'm still not sure the Bears have the horses to contend, but I do appreciate the bold move in changing their offensive philosophy. It's reminiscent of Hoskins going from the H-back heavy offense in his first year to the Oregon spread offense they've used since. To change the offensive style, there has to be a long term vision at Jefferson, hopefully from both the staff and administration.
It's great to be a Bear .
Sorry, I can't post that comment.
I think that's a fairly accurate assessment. A few breaks they could go 5-4 even 6-3. On other hand, few bad breaks, could go other way. They are a few other significant players that you didn't mention, that could be the difference. SMCC game always a good one, if Jefferson plays all year like they do for that game, could be great season. Got a great group of seniors. GO BEARS!
Go bears.
