Huron League Thoughts and Questions

I’m sure glad I decided to head over to Romulus Friday night.

Which is more impressive? Seventy points or six-hundred yards rushing.

Great season by Milan! Nice turn around from a season ago.

SMCC by 22 over Consortium. Glad I know what I am talking about.

Tecumseh over Milan by 20. Guess I don’t know what I am talking about.

Robichaud’s Darius Phillips should play Division I ball but may be too small.

GI @ Country Day or SMCC @ Grass Lake?

My Spartans stink!

I don’t know which field is darker Navarre or Romulus?

Veteran coaches are worth at least a touchdown every game.

I can still here that guy from Robichaud screaming in the stands at the officials.

Friday night was a beautiful night for football.

When does next season start for those not playing still?

  • I would think Coach Hoskins should have a blank check for at least 4 or 5 years seeing that he did something that hadn't been done in over a decade at Milan.

  • Following up on the coaching carosel talk...

To my continued surprise, there are a lot of folks in Milan who have yet to accept Coach Hoskins in Milan.

    Yes, you read that right.

There is a vocal faction that hasn't been happy with Hoskins all season long, all the way through a ten game win streak and an outright league title. It's nothing short of unbelievable.

To echo what Chris has said before: when the team wins, you hear that it's because of the kids; when a team loses, you hear that it's because of the coach.

There are a lot of fans who are upset that Milan isn't running their old I-formation offense where the RB dives straight into the line, win or lose. When a shotgun snap is off target, or even when the offensive skill position players pivot to the sidelines to get the signs so the play call can be changed, folks rolled their eyes and barked their dissent at the coaches. Even when the resulting audible was for a seam pass that went for a touchdown, fans cheered the result but a noticable chunk still didn't care for the methods.

One of the things that impressed me tremendously about the Milan coaches this season was how they turned around that team with their heads on the collective chopping block. It can be tough for a new coach taking over for a local legend to get total buy-in from the community. A lot has been said about the overall numbers of the high school program and the lack of a JV team this year (something that I expect to rebound next year, but there will likely be a lingering effect at least next season), and most of the comments that levied blame cast it at the kids and the coaches, but I'd also shine a spotlight on parents and family members as well. It takes a special kid to give everything to a team run by a coach that the player's dad thinks is an idiot. This goes for all levels of sports--it makes for an uphill battle.

I'll never forget someone talking with me after Hoskins lost his first ever game as a head coach last season, asking me "How long do you think people will put up with this?" After *one game*! What do folks think the mood was after last year's 1-8 season?

Those who have kept the faith have been rewarded with the enjoyment that a historic season brings. For those who kept their heels dug in, I'm not sure you got all the enjoyment you could out of this season, and I feel sorry for you.

I'm obviously a bit emotional about this, and I'm not saying that the Hall of Fame needs to start work on their Jesse Hoskins bust, but I'm hoping that this season helps to give Coach a number of years to really get this program the way he wants it for years to come.

  • Milan finishes 1-8 last season and I'm suppose to pick them first? Airport qualifies for the playoffs every year for the last decade or so and I'm suppose to forsee them losing their coach and finishing 4th?

The Detroit News picked Airport 1st and Riverview 2nd. The Free Press listed the coaches poll like this Airport, Riverview, SMCC, Grosse Ile, Jefferson, Milan, Huron and Flat Rock

Very few people picked Milan and they all have a Milan address. Fact is, those same people picked them first in 2011 as well.

  • Yeah stick to predictions and blogging. You're pretty good at that!

Easy now, I think he had Airport to finish first and Milan to finish last.

    lets keep it real

  • I hear VanWashenova wants to go back to D coordinator. Also heard JV coach may take the job, don't know how true that is. EM
