I wouldn’t normally do this but I have to recommend a book on high school football that I recently read. I am not much of a reader and I could not put this book down. This book is written by Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News. He is a native Detroiter and Michigan State alumnus. The name of the book is Goodfellows: The Champions of St. Ambrose.
This book is an insight into one of the greatest football programs in Michigan High School football history. St. Ambrose on the Detroit/Grosse Pointe border became the most feared football program in Detroit behind the coaching of future Super Bowl Champions. St. Ambrose with an enrollment of 400 took on the big boys of the famed Detroit Catholic and Public School Leagues back when 40,000 people would attend the annual GoodFellows Bowl game at Briggs stadium in Detroit. (Yes, I said 40,000 people)
While reading this book I laughed, I cried, I admired and I shook my head at what it took to build this great program. This book provides great insight for any athletic program hoping to achieve greatness. It also takes a look at the backdoor deals that brought great players to St. Ambrose and how it was justified.
I guarantee you will love this book whether you love football, grew up in the City of Detroit or have wondered how the Catholics built their great athletic programs. It is a must read for anyone who has coached the game of football or aspires to be one.
